The Tangea system; Sunday: December 28th, 3010“Coming up on Tangea,” Buzz said unnecessarily, his fingers drumming nervously on his console. “Mira, activate atmospheric wings and comm the palace.” He gave himself a brief glance. He’d changed clothes… several times that morning: first his uniform, then civvies, then his dress uniform, then civvies… Eventually, he’d settled on Star Command’s casual uniform – the light green outfit. Overall, he was definitely nervous, and more than a little disturbed by that nervousness. Of course, it also wasn’t everyday he had to ask a racist king for his daughter’s hand in marriage. Craters. ((Cherry, I kinda figure Cora would be with them, just in case. Oh, and they’re in the cruiser.))

(I thought Cora would be with them. But why are they in the cruiser?? Couldn't they have been more comfortable in Buzz's car?)
"Atmospheric wings active." Mira announced, falling back into her seat and straighting out her skirt. She hated skirts, almost with a passion. She was opt to wearing some nice capris, but Cora said otherwise. Maybe letting the teenager spend the night at her apartment was a bad idea?
She looked over at Buzz, about to say something when her mouth snapped shut, forming a straight line of lips. She lightly smacked him in the arm, but it was hard enough to get his attention.
"Will you stop? Father's not going to kill you. And if he was going to we'd use Cora as a shield."
"Thanks a lot. You want me to be in the middle of Gramps' wrath? What kind of mother are you?"
Mira sighed. "Not like that. What I was meaning is 'use you as a shield. As in, 'Dad, you do so much as touch Buzz, you may never get a grandaughter in the future."
Cora huffed, sitting back in her seat some. "Doesn't make it any better. I'm still going to be in the middle of it all. Why did I come anyways?"

((I’m pretty sure Buzz’s car is a two-seater sports car. There wouldn’t be any room for Cora.))
“We’ll probably have to tell your grandfather about you,” Buzz replied, “and if we do, he’ll probably want proof.” He turned to Mira. “And I’m traditionally nervous, thank you very much. Guys are supposed to be scared when they have to face their future in-laws.

"Well, you can get any more proof than this. Unless he wants a blood test done, then I've opting for leaving."
*
"No Buzz, guys are only scared when they've done something wrong to said in-law." Mira bit her tongue, taking that back. "Actually you do have a right to be nervous."

“Tough, kiddo. You’re staying put.”
***
Buzz stared at her. “…I do?”
Oops, time to land. He carefully settled the cruiser down on a landing pad attached to the palace. “Why should I be nervous?”

"Oh come on! Don't tell me you wouldn't plan the first escape route if Gramps was going to dissect your mind."
"She has a point, Buzz." Mira agreed.
* "Yes, you do." Mira nodded. "You and father have never been on the best terms. And they haven't gotten any better since my mock wedding. That you crashed."
"Oh, that infamous story. Gramps loves hearing about that story. It makes him go red in the face."
"Cora, honey, you're not helping."
"I'm here to help your case. Not your nerves."

“I always have an escape route planned.”
***
Buzz groaned. “I thought things had gotten better by the Starthought incident!” He unbuckled and stood. “Come on – let’s get this over with.” He led the way out of the cruiser and onto the landing pad.

"Even for your soon to be in-law?" Mira shook her head. "Why do I even bother asking?"
"Because curiosity tempts us all."
"You should be see and not heard." Mira caught her blank stairs in the window and looked back. "I'm serious. I want you to say nothing to father before you're told to. I want nothing to go wrong today."
"I'll be good. Besides, Gramps adores me in the future."
Mira gave her another warning looking.
"I promise. Seriously you can trust me. I think I've earned that by now!"
*
"Nope. Sorry, but father never seems to forget. And he holds grudges for a long time."
Mira was about to unbuckle before another thought occurred to her.
"Now that I remember it, I think he still hasn't forgiven you for influencing me to join Star Command."

Buzz groaned. “…Terrific.”
***
“So… I guess you need to ghost me in…” Buzz mused, studying the solid walls of the palace. “Oh!” He turned to Cora with a questioning look. “Cora, can you ghost?”

"Hey, I'll behave. I think Mom as you to worry about more than me! I sense an argument going to happen. A big one at that."
* "Sure can. Gramps took me for a month in the summer and trained me nonstop. I can ghost, read minds, and do the occasional mind squeeze. Plus a countless of other things."

"No need." A most petulant, and holier-than-thou voice remarked ahead of the trio.
There he was in all his regal splendour: King Nova, the rightful ruler of Tangea. And as his presence became known, the royal Tangean trumpets trumped in the air most proudly--an entrance fit for a king, you could say.
The King thumped his cane once, his nose in the air, before he opened one eye to view his daughter and her...guests.
"Really, Mira, did you have to bring the entire circus with you?" He asked in high disdain, finally taking the time to look at her daughter's choice of friends.

Buzz stared at Cora. “He… did? That’s like… putting a plasma cannon in the hands of a four-year-old!” He rubbed at his eyes and shook his head. “Whatever. Let’s just get inside, please.”
In his nervousness, Buzz had more or less forgotten that the animosity actually worked both ways sometimes. He managed not to frown, but his voice was a little tight as he said, “No circus here – hello, King Nova.”

Cora had to be in the middle of being proud and offended by what her grandfather said. She smiled anyways, being as polite as the little Princess she was.
But smile was mostly due to the fact that her grandfather was going to flip when he heard their announcement.
And that he just put down his future granddaughter. Maybe this is why he was so attached to her?
*
"Father," Mira groaned, covering her eyes with her hand. "Can't you be nice for one day?"

"Now, Mira..." King Nova began with a scolding look. "You know how much I absolutely loathe those space monkeys on my beautiful, pristine palace. It's our right, as Tangeans, to stick to our own kind; not consort with...off-worlders." He ended on another sour note, giving Lightyear a stink eye.
Who was that at Mira's side? Another Tangean girl? He had never seen her before, and as King, he would have recognized her! Bah, no matter. He'll sort that out later.
"Ahem. Now, why are you here, Lightyear." The King addressed the Space Ranger, still not bothering to look at him, nose in air and hands resting on cane proudly. "Is there some trouble...I can assist you with? I'm sure wherever it is it's with the Grounders."

((Ohhh, thank you, EEZ! *hugs* I’m sorry for being such a jerk!))
Buzz raised his chin fractionally, determined not to give his future father-in-law the satisfaction of getting to him.
Buzz shook his head, feeling those butterflies returning. No, it was something bigger. Mynocks, maybe? “No Grounders, sir, just, uhhh…” He glanced at Mira and Cora, trying to gather his courage and figure out what to say. He took a deep breath and said, “Your Highness, I’d like your blessing to marry Mira.” Okay, good so far—no way would the King buy that, but at least Buzz had said it. “We love each other,” he continued as steadily as he could, “and we want your blessing, but we’re getting married with or without.”
Oh wow, that had to be just about the gutsiest thing he’d ever said! He glanced at the girls again and braced himself, waiting for the inevitable fallout.
