Is it just me, or does XR seem to constantly want to be around people who reject him? 42, Commander Nebula, XL... continually hitting on Mira, even though she's clearly not interested... and then he neglects, even backstabs the people who are nice to him, like Booster...

Never knew that and you're right Kila. And Breta, he loves the attention; he sunbathes in the attention.

It does get him attention, but not acceptance. And he does want to be accepted by people. He usually isn't; mostly because most people think "he's just a robot", but partly because he doesn't really know how to interact with people sometimes. I think that's why he treats Booster badly at times- he's taking his frustration out on the one person he *knows* will always forgive him.

I agree... as for the unacceptables, perhaps he just does it to annoy them (XL, Mira) but others he can feel their potential... since he's a robot and thus not easily affected by conflicting emotions that can cloud other people's judgement and intuition. (I'm guessing here, I honestly don't know just how much of XR is "human" and "computer"... if we follow reality, he doesn't really have "emotions" so to speak) or maybe he just really feels for the people who have trouble showing emotions... He wants to make them happy! (or at least a reaction from them... ) as for Booster, he probably dislikes the fact that Booster is so very strong and yet such a baby at times... he's constantly guilty of the fact that Booster is so much more a better Ranger than he is, and that Booster really cares for him, even when he's stopped caring about himself... that's just my 2 cents...

In a lot of ways, I think XR has the emotional maturity of a child. It's not so much that he's recently built, but recently gained sentience. If he had been built ten years before, but still only became aware at the same time as in canon, he'd still be the same. Everyone around him are adults and have had a lifetime's worth of experience dealing with emotions, interpersonal relationships, ect. But XR hasn't.
I think the reason people don't really pick up on this fact because he doesn't *act* very child-like. He likes to flirt and gamble, he doesn't hold any of the naiveté or constant wonder that, say, Data of Star-Trek has. He tries to act more mature or adult then he actually is…trying to pick things up as he goes along instead of just asking about behavior, and what is appropriate in different situations.

hai...which is why despite his... flaws, i admire him so... and which is why when he's crying i feel the urge to hug him... he only cries when he can't bottle everything in anymore, something traumatic, like XL stealing his one original part, the fact of Buzz not being there to lead them for a Zurg attack, just makes him explode and becomes a mush of emotions.... he's also a quick recoverer, so everyone thinks it's just him reacting to the moment, and don't think nothing more of it, while he just tucks all the oozing emotions back to the back of his mind until the next eruption... the problem about this method, is that as more traumatic things happen to him (which will undoubtedly happen) he'll quickly run out of space to hide those bottled up feelings and he'll lose it even quicker and quicker... Eventually, it'll break him if he doesn't change this method of facing his traumatic moments... thoughts? disagreements? maybe I went out of tangent somewhere....

No; I totally agree. In fact, I think you hit the nail on the head. In fact, you said it so well, I don't think I have anything else to add. He needs someone who understands him.

I'm not the only one who sees that then. To me, XR seems to be trying to hide who he truly is. He retreats behind this front of bitter sarcasm until something leaves him too shaken to keep it up. When he's around Booster (The Torque Armada) he's all, 'stick with me, pay attention, do everything I do, HEY I'M SMARTER THAN YOU, REALLY,' and then when he's alone (The Taking of PC-7, Return of XL) he acts nervous and unsure of himself. And in Shape Stealer, you can see he's trying to be adult and dependable, only to break at the last minute and blast someone's boxers.
