*prepare for huge post*
For one thing, his personality is the exact opposite of what a robot should be. He's over-emotional as opposed to cold and unfeeling, petty and careless as opposed to logical and calculating, and a goof-off instead of being bound to his job the way 'good' robots are.
He's also a well-developed, three dimensional character. Where most sidekick characters are there solely to pitch sarcasm and make sandwiches (<_< XR actually shows emotion and thought processes, acting happy when things are going well and becoming crabby when they're not (compare the first few minutes of NOS-4-A2 to nearly all of Speed Trap, for example), as opposed to, say, Iago, who always acts pretty much the same.
XR is also different from typical sidekick characters in that he actually... does things. Nuff said. <_<
Also, he's got an excellent voice actor (NOT NEIL FLYNN, the other guy) who actually knows when to be understated- most VAs are never understated. It lends a whole new dimension to the character.
And he's a space ranger who gambles and steals, how awesome is that. @_@
...and he's cute. Okay. There. I said it. He's not always cute though, which I think is a plus, since no one is ALWAYS cute.
And, like a real person, he changes his demeanor around other characters- he acts very different around NOS-4-A2 than he does around XL. XR always comes out on top when dealing with XL, whether by outsmarting him (granted, not a difficult feat), utilizing verbal pwnage, or actually physically BEATING THE CRAP OUT OF XL in one episode which is airing tomorrow and I'll have to get it up on this site right away because it's awesome and- anyway. Sometimes he acts almost happy to see XL, cuz he's his 'brother' and all.
However, around NOS-4-A2, he pretty much lies down and takes whatever beating NOS has to offer. He's too scared to do anything else. Look at the end of the Slayer, he's not even trying to get away anymore.
Basically, I like XR because he's just an incredibly well-made cartoon character, and also more appealing to me in particular because I like goofy anti-heroes. =P
