This is something that me and my IRL friend were debating over the phone last night.
Where did Zurg get the grubs?
I think that he conquered them, and in exchange for not killing them all, they would work for him. My friend thinks that he cloned them. However, I really don't think that's the case, as I don't think that Zurg could really clone anything without help. (and my own dad even said that Zurg's not that slick)
My IRL friend also thinks that they could've been the result of a genetic mutation, but again, I don't see how Zurg is doing all of this without the Grubs. Unless he has some hornets with him, and they're just pressing buttons...
Well, what do you guys think?

I think the grubs were already there on Planet Z, just doin' their thang, and Zurg showed up and was all like 'I CAN HAS PLANET NOW, YOU BE'S MY SLAVES K. GO BUILD ME SUM HORNETS'.

I agree. I don't think he cloned them. Don't forget: they are like an equivalent of the LGMs. And the LGMs had their own planet.

Yeah, I figured that everyone already agreed on this already, but my IRL friend conned me into it...

Well, if you've read my redone fanfic, you'd already know what I think but here I go anyway! XD
I agree with you, Loony, that he conquered them on some other planet and took them back with him, assimilating them into his task force. Makes sense, I think. They don't really seem to be independent all that much.

A) The grubs originated on Planet Z (or whatever was called before Zurg took over) and were enslaved by Zurg.
B) Grubs originated from another planet (possibly a planet close to the LGM's since you know) but Zurg enslaved them or something and moved them to Planet Z.

They probably originated on Planet Z. The grubs look like they're built to take the harsh conditions of the otherwise inhabitable planet. Just look at what they go through with Zurg. Zurg probably took them over and the rest is history. I wonder if they had any government before Zurg, or were they just nomadic creatures, living in caves on Planet Z?
BTW, has anyone ever wondered how Zurg got his brain pods? They were obviously fully organic and independent at one point in their lives. They're also really intelligent. I doubt Zurg could create half his evil ray guns and toxic gases without them. He's more of an... overall planner if you know what I mean. So why are obviously intelligent beings living the rest of their prolonged lives in a jar on a evil dust-ball, producing evil weapons for a bad guy they're obviously scared of?
I doubt Zurg take out want ads.
WANTED: evil minion. Must be submissive, eager to please, and ready to be dictated by a mad tyrant. Intelligence is wanted, but not needed. Any submissive drone is fine. The job is guaranteed to be an out-of-body experience. Healthcare will not be included in this employment.

I don't think the brain pods were organic, despite the exchange about forsaking their bodies in the pilot episode. They can actually move around and they have mouths to consume food. No real brain can do that. They're probably just brain-like creatures who inhabit the pods for better mobility. Plus, they seem to be very weak in general. Their bodies look like they could be easily squished were it not for the brain pods.
As for the grubs themselves, they don't necessarily have to come from Planet Z. They look like they originated from a Level 1 hazardous planet. Planet Z, however, has oxygen. Speaking of which, Planet Z's original name is Xrghthung, and that is pretty d--n close to Zurg, isn't it? Plus, their insect-like appearance and manner probably means that they consider themselves part of a colony. They probably lived a lot like ants and beetles, burrowing underground and avoiding predators that lived on the surface. That can explain their timid personalities. And they're also similar to the LGMs. Perhaps not as connected with each other as the LGMs themselves, but stronger and smarter when they're all together.
That's my two cents on the matter.
