"Terrible isn't it?" Warp shook his head sadly. "It's still the one food that no one will recommend to you. Thank goodness there are more options available."

((@kj: Hey, got your email – I’ll work on the draft just as soon as my magazine article (school assignment) is finished!))
Erin gave her a rueful smile. “Whatever you say.”
XR just groaned, and Buzz gave a short laugh. “I’m afraid it was never that simple, Liz. Maybe sometime you’ll get the whole story.”
“Yeah, all our adventures fighting Nos-4-A2 were really exciting!” Booster gushed. “Like the time that we had to wear veggie suits and take that ole energy vampire down with plant power!” He swung one fist, then another, forward to emphasize his point.
Buzz laughed. “Not that they’re all that much better, but it’s true that just about everything else beats meatloaf. You need half a bottle of ketchup for that stuff.”
“That’s what I said,” Erin nodded. She glanced at the food counter, contemplating. “I think I’ll just take good old pancakes and eggs.”
“I hope you’re going to lay off the syrup this time,” said Buzz.
Erin rolled her eyes. “Hey, I put on just enough to hold off the plain taste of the pancakes. I mean, they’re almost kinda sour without the syrup.”

Did anything in this cafeteria taste right? Much less made right? Cora sighed, wishing she was back in the future. She missed her mom's scrambled eggs in the mornings before school. It felt so long since she had real food.
"Oh, Mira I strongly suggest reading into a few cook books. And taking classes. If you're going to have kids in the future you better learn to cook." She smiled up at her.
Mira looked a bit annoyed at this very topic. "I do have some cooking skills mind you. Not very good cooking skills, but I managed to keep myself alive for the past three years or so."
Cora shrugged, not taking it as a complete answer to her question. "Still, it's good to know a few good things and get better at them. And when you go to this cooking class, take dad with you. Please. The man needs to know how to cook. I don't need to starve myself every time you have a sick day."
She meant for Buzz to hear that part. Granted she never had to starve, and her dad could cook pretty well to get by, but that was the time in her life where the meatloaf incident occurred. She did not want that.
"It doesn't get that bad, does it?"

“Well, there’s something to talk about over breakfast,” she smirked. “Energy vampires and space mummies.” She shook her head. “Next thing I know you’ll be talking about robot werewolves or something.”
“...I think I’ll just go for eggs and bacon. Can’t go wrong with that.”

"Good choice." Cora said, easing up a little now. Just like daddy said. She felt a little guilty for treating the new girl that way. But the disturbed feeling didn't subside. Her being here rocked the boat a bit too much. One more surprise might capsize it.
"The eggs are a little soggy sunny-side up though. I recommend getting them scrambled if you want something to hold on to."
Mira smiled at Buzz, relieved that his talking to Cora might actually helped matters. She was back to normal. But it if Mira looked back right then, she would have caught Cora rubbing at her right arm.

Liz turned to look at Cora. “Um, thanks. I’ll take that advice.”
She felt a little better that Cora was actually talking to her now. Before, she’d been feeling really self-conscious about the entire situation and worried that she had done something to set her off without knowing it.
She guessed that she’d have to just wait and see, like with everything else here in this new place.

((@sky: YAY!))
"You mean you only use half a bottle? So that's were you get all your "plans" from." Warp elbowed the captain teasingly. "And I never said the options were better, I just said they were there."
"Sure, we can talk about robot werewolves if you'd like." Warp picked up a tray and utensils and got in line. "After energy vampires and space mummies of course."

Erin had watched the exchange with growing amusement, and finally burst out giggling. “Hey, Cora – I could teach them how to cook, no charge. Give them a few lessons on the basics, then give them some recipes to practice as homework.”
“Cooking homework??” Buzz repeated, blue eyes very round. “Good grief!” He turned to Cora. “And whaddaya mean, you don’t need to starve yourself every time Mira has a sick day??”
Booster and XR groaned.
“They’re called wirewolves,” Buzz corrected wearily. “Robot werewolves, I mean. One of my Academy classmates – Ty Parsec – got turned into a wirewolf by Nos-4-A2, and later on, Nos used a ray gun to mutate entire world populations into wirewolves, so he could feed on their energy.” He glanced at Mira, then Booster. “Mira and Booster included, when they got in the gun’s way.”
“Talk about a nightmare!” XR moaned. “We wouldn’t’ve even made it without the help of my defective big brother!”
“Guys, you’re gonna confuse her,” Erin interjected. “You wanna tell Liz the story, start from the beginning.”
“Well, that would be when Nos first appeared, right?” Booster wondered.
“I guess,” Erin replied, almost absently. “Right now, I don’t really care – I’m starving!” She hurried into the line to prove her point.
Picking up a tray and getting behind Warp, Buzz returned Mira’s smile contemplatively, catching Cora’s little telltale habit.
Booster was already ahead and loading up his two trays. The cafeteria ‘bots were scurrying to fill up the dents that the Jo-Adian Ranger was making.

Liz gaped at them incredulously. Holding her empty tray limply in her hands. “...I was kidding,” she said weakly. “I... wirewolves?”
It looked like a thoughtless joke around here could really go a long way. She’d better watch what she said from now on.

Erin gave Liz a sympathetic pat on the shoulder. “It’s okay, hon,” she assured her. “Some guys just don’t know when to shut uuup~!” She aimed that last part at the male members of Team Lightyear, who had the grace to look sheepish.
She gave Liz a rueful smile. “Let’s just get breakfast.”

“Okay,” Liz said, grinning at Erin’s antics as she fell into step behind her in the food line.
She took the scrambled eggs, like Cora suggested, and took bacon as well, adding some toast on the side and some ketchup on her eggs and bacon. It was a bad habit of hers , adding ketchup to her eggs. Abe and Kate had absolutely hated that. But Roger would usually follow suit, so she hadn’t felt so alone in that.

"What would you say if I told you that I think she means me, more than anyone esle?" Warp whispered to Buzz as he loaded one plate with a healthy serving of eggs and bacon.
He was half-wishing that he had three or four clones of himself so that he could look down the line at Erin and have the clones copy him. What would they ever do with four of me around? He moved down the line a bit and started on a second plate, of pancakes.

“I would say that you’re imagining it,” Buzz whispered back. “She’s said things like that plenty of times to me and XR.”
Erin grinned. “Heeey, you put ketchup on your eggs? Cool! I always thought that tasted good – Buzz doesn’t agree with me.”
“I never said either way,” Buzz rejoined.
“Suuure.” Erin laughed. “Ever tried hot sauce on your eggs, Liz? It’s fantastic.”

"Hmm, you should see what I have to put with at home." He muttered, grabbing a bottle of syrup, before heading over to the drinks.
"Okay, Erin, hot sause is good with a lot of food, but eggs is not one of them." Warp wondered if Erin had ever dared to put hot sause in any of her recipes.

"Nah, they might blow up your kitchen."
"You're nice." Mira swung back, filling her plate with eggs. "How did I raise you anyways?"
"No different than any other family. Just never let XR babysit. Just saying."
*
"Well Dad, you're not the best cook in the world. And I was six at the time and you hardly knew the wonders of the kitchen. We really weren't looking forward to whatever you were whipping up."
